Percussive Massage for Sports Recovery: What Science Really Says

Percussive massage, commonly performed using massage guns, has become a popular recovery tool among athletes and active individuals. But does it really improve performance, or is its role limited to recovery only?

A recent scientific study helps clarify this question—especially for runners and endurance athletes.

What Is Percussive Massage?

Percussive massage uses a handheld device that delivers rapid, repetitive mechanical pulses to muscle tissue.
The goal is to:

  • reduce muscle soreness and pain

  • decrease fatigue

  • improve perceived recovery after training or competition

It is widely used in sports recovery settings, gyms, and rehabilitation centers.

What Did the Study Investigate?

A randomized clinical trial published in Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine (2025) examined whether percussive massage could improve recovery and performance after running.

Participants:
84 recreational runners (18–60 years old)

Protocol:
After completing a 6.5–7 km road race, participants received:

  • either 10 minutes of percussive massage on the quadriceps, or

  • a control intervention

Researchers measured:

  • quadriceps pain

  • muscle fatigue

  • perceived recovery

  • vertical jump performance (as an indicator of explosive power)

Assessments were conducted up to 72 hours post-race.

Key Findings

  • âś… Reduced muscle pain

  • âś… Lower perceived fatigue

  • âś… Improved subjective recovery

  • ❌ No improvement in vertical jump performance

In short: percussive massage helps athletes feel better, but it does not enhance short-term explosive performance.

What Does This Mean for Athletes?

Percussive massage is an effective recovery tool, especially after endurance activities such as running.
It supports:

  • faster comfort recovery

  • better training adherence

  • improved overall well-being

However, it should not be used as a method to boost power or neuromuscular performance before competition.

Percussive Massage at ARA Performance & Recovery (Andorra)

At ARA Performance & Recovery, located in the center of Andorra, percussive massage is integrated into a complete recovery strategy, alongside:

  • strength & conditioning

  • sports physiotherapy

  • recovery technologies

  • personalized training planning

Our goal is not quick fixes, but intelligent recovery that supports long-term performance.

If you train, compete, or recover in Andorra, proper recovery is not optional—it’s part of performance.
